Vietnam arrests two Australian nationals carrying 3.5kg of drugs

Two Australian nationals have been caught carrying 3.5 kilograms of heroin at a Ho Chi Minh City airport, local customs officers said Sunday.

The customs unit at Tan Son Nhat International Airport identified the smugglers as J.N.A.J, 31, and 24-year-old K.C.G, both of whom held an Australian passport.

The drugs were discovered being secretly hidden in the passengers' luggage as it was being scanned at the airport.

The 2 and their trafficked substances have been handed over to city police.

Last Sunday Tan Son Nhat customs officers captured a 26-year-old Chinese woman who was bidding to illicitly bring 2.2kg of methamphetamine, also stashed in her luggage, into Vietnam.

The woman, Li Chunying, was then charged with "illegally transporting drugs" after being given to local anti-drug police.

Chunying had traveled through several countries before arriving in Vietnam, sources said.

Vietnamese authorities have seized about 24 kilos of drugs and more than 2,000 synthetic drug pills at Tan Son Nhat since the beginning of this year.

Trafficking in heroin weighing 100 grams or more could result in the death penalty, according to Vietnam's laws.

Iran Executes Prisoner in Front of Seven-year-old Son

The Islamic Republic's judiciary has executed one more prisoner amid a surge in the death penalty. Nategh Hosseini was executed at Qazvin Central Prison on Saturday, reportedly in the presence of his seven-year-old son.  According to the Iran Human Rights Organization, Hosseini had been arrested three years ago on charges of alleged murder and subsequently sentenced to death.

Texas executed Ramiro Gonzales on Wednesday despite a stunning reversal from a psychiatrist who helped send him to death row 17 years ago.  Gonzales, 41, was killed by lethal injection as punishment for kidnapping, raping and murdering Bridget Townsend when they were both 18. At the time, Gonzales was struggling with drug addiction. He killed Townsend, his drug dealer’s girlfriend, while trying to steal drugs. He had turned 18 two months before the killing, making him barely old enough to be legally eligible to be sentenced to death.

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana is one of 27 states where state-backed executions are still legal, but no one has been put to death in a Hoosier prison in 15 years. Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb and Attorney General Todd Rokita look to change that.
