Fallen Chinese politician Bo Xilai's corruption trial ends

JINAN, China: The trial of fallen Chinese politician Bo Xilai on bribery, embezzlement and abuse of power charges ended Monday after five days of hearings, the court said.

The Intermediate People's Court in the eastern city of Jinan will "announce the verdict at a date to be decided", it said on its verified account on Sina Weibo, a Chinese equivalent of Twitter.

The trial had initially only been expected to last two days, but stretched on as Bo, once the Communist Party chief of the megacity of Chongqing, mounted a spirited defence.

Delayed transcripts of the hearings posted online by the court painted a dramatic picture of the defendant denying the accusations and decrying prosecution witnesses and evidence.

But no foreign media were present in court and no independent verification is possible.

But analysts widely believe that a guilty verdict is a foregone conclusion and a long prison sentence has already been agreed.

The scandal surrounding Bo, which shook the ruling Communist Party, emerged after British businessman Neil Heywood was poisoned in a Chongqing hotel room and Bo's police chief fled to a US consulate.

Bo's wife Gu Kailai was convicted of Heywood's murder and given a suspended death penalty, which in China is normally commuted to life imprisonment.

Iran Executes Prisoner in Front of Seven-year-old Son

The Islamic Republic's judiciary has executed one more prisoner amid a surge in the death penalty. Nategh Hosseini was executed at Qazvin Central Prison on Saturday, reportedly in the presence of his seven-year-old son.  According to the Iran Human Rights Organization, Hosseini had been arrested three years ago on charges of alleged murder and subsequently sentenced to death.

Texas executed Ramiro Gonzales on Wednesday despite a stunning reversal from a psychiatrist who helped send him to death row 17 years ago.  Gonzales, 41, was killed by lethal injection as punishment for kidnapping, raping and murdering Bridget Townsend when they were both 18. At the time, Gonzales was struggling with drug addiction. He killed Townsend, his drug dealer’s girlfriend, while trying to steal drugs. He had turned 18 two months before the killing, making him barely old enough to be legally eligible to be sentenced to death.

Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb and Attorney General Todd Rokita look to change that.
