Iran | Man Executed for Drug Offences in Zahedan, Man Executed for Drug Charges in Karaj Penitentiary, Man Executed for Murder in Isfahan

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); May 22, 2022: Esmail Shahbakhsh, a Baluch man sentenced to death for drug offences, was executed in Zahedan Central Prison. 

According to Hal Vash, a Baluch man was executed in Zahedan Central Prison on the morning of May 21. His identity has been reported as 50-year-old Esmail Shahbakhsh who was sentenced to death for drug-related charges.

Esmail Shahbakhsh was arrested for the drug charges in 2019 and sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Court. He had denied all the charges against him in court. 

At the time of writing, his execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran. 

According to reports compiled by Iran Human Rights, at least 126 people were executed on drug-related charges in 2021, a fivefold increase compared to drug executions in the previous three years. None of the 2021 drug-related executions were reported by official sources. 

Data gathered by Iran Human Rights also shows that Baluch prisoners accounted for 21% of all executions in 2021, while only representing 2–6% of Iran’s population. 

Man Executed for Drug Charges in Karaj Penitentiary


Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); May 22, 2022: Ayat Ghasemi-Delfani who was sentenced to death for drug offences and murder, has been executed for the drug-related charges in Karaj Penitentiary. 

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, a man was executed in Karaj Penitentiary on May 18. His identity has been established as Ayat Ghasemi-Delfani who was sentenced to death for drug-related offences and later also sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for a murder. 

Informed sources have told Iran Human Rights that the qisas sentence was for a murder committed in prison but he was executed for the drug-related charges. 

Ayat Ghasemi-Delfani was transferred from Rajai Shahr Prison to Karaj Penitentiary the day prior to his execution.

At the time of writing, his execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

Young Man Executed for Murder in Isfahan


Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); May 22, 2022: Ahmad Gashoul has been executed for murder charges in Isfahan Central Prison. 

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, a man was executed in Isfahan Central Prison on May 19. His identity has been established as 21-year-old Ahmad Gashoul who was sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder. 

An informed source told Iran Human Rights: “Ahmad Gashoul had killed a prison guard while trying to escape prison in November 2019.”

At the time of writing, his execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

According to data gathered by Iran Human Rights, at least 183 people were executed on murder charges in 2021. Those charged with the umbrella term of “intentional murder” are sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) regardless of intent or circumstances due to a lack of grading in law. 

Once a defendant has been convicted, the victim’s family are required to choose between death as retribution, diya (blood money) or forgiveness.
