Oklahoma | More Than 35 Lawmakers Urge Governor To Review Richard Glossip's Death Row Case

Dozens of Oklahoma state lawmakers are calling on Governor Kevin Stitt to order an independent investigation into the case of a death row prisoner. The lawmakers are even taking Richard Glossip's case to national TV.

A documentary about Glossip a few years ago titled “Killing Richard Glossip” continues to get international attention.

Now, there is a petition for an independent investigation, as Glossip could be scheduled for execution next year.

Oklahoma state representative Kevin McDugle, R-Broken Arrow, and Pushmataha County resident Justin Jackson said they interviewed with Dr. Phil in Los Angeles on Sept. 22 on this case because they are passionate about it. The interview’s air date has not been scheduled.

"I'm convinced, 100 percent, we've got an innocent man sitting on death row now, and so I'm going on national TV to catch the ear of the attorney general, the governor, whoever else will listen," said Rep. McDugle.

Glossip was found guilty of the 1997 murder of Barry Van Treese at the Best Budget Inn in Oklahoma City. Glossip has been hours from execution three times over the last 25 years.

Justin Sneed, who killed Van Treese, was sentenced to life without parole after testifying that Glossip hired him for the murder.

"It would be one of the darkest days, if not the darkest days, in our judicial history if we put an innocent man to death," said Jackson, who learned of Glossip through the documentary and has visited Glossip in prison several times.

Rep. Justin Humphrey, R–Antlers, also interviewed with Dr. Phil and is among the more than 35 state lawmakers questioning the credibility of some of the state's previous witnesses and evidence.

"I'm asking you to produce the facts to show there is no question this guy is the person who killed the victim and who deserves to be executed," said Humphrey.

Glossip's latest attorney, Don Knight, said Glossip's two previous attorneys were not adequate, and he has new evidence.

"Almost everything we have came from Justin Sneed's own mouth about what he did and the fact that Richard had nothing to do with it," explained Knight.

News On 6 asked Gov. Stitt for a comment. In a statement, his office said:

“Richard Glossip, like all death row inmates, will be eligible for a clemency hearing before the Pardon and Parole Board once an execution date has been set. The governor respects the judicial process and does not comment on cases that will appear before the Pardon and Parole Board.”

Japan | Death-row inmates' lawsuit targeting same-day notifications of executions dismissed

The Osaka District Court on Monday dismissed a lawsuit by death row inmates that claimed same-day notifications of executions violate the Constitution — the first ruling of its kind. The plaintiffs filed the lawsuit against the government in hopes of sparking a wider discussion on the rights of death row prisoners. They also sought ¥22 million in compensation and plan to appeal to a higher court.

U.S. Supreme Court to hear Arizona death penalty case that could redefine historic precedent

The U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments centering on an Arizona death row prisoner that could set new precedent to determining ineffective assistance of counsel.  A Mohave County Superior Court jury convicted Danny Lee Jones for the 1992 murders of Robert Weaver and his daughter Tisha, as well as the attempted murder of Weaver’s grandmother. A judge sentenced Jones to death for the two murders.

Iran | Probable Child Offender and Child Bride, Husband Executed for Drug Charges

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); April 15 2024: Marjan Hajizadeh and Esmail Hassaniani, a couple sentenced to death for drug-related charges in a joint case, were executed in Zanjan Central Prison.  Marjan is reported to have been 16 at the time of arrest, which IHRNGO is working to confirm. If verified, she will be the first child offender executed for drug charges since 2014. She was also a child bride forced into marriage.

There’s an effort underway, in the current legislative session in Baton Rouge, to reverse course on the controversial execution method with Senate Bill 430. When Louisiana legislators approved the use of nitrogen gas asphyxiation as an execution method during a second special legislative session in February, the move attracted national attention; not the least because it has only been used in the U.S. once. That’s when Alabama executed convicted killer Kenneth Eugene Smith on January 25th of this year. Now there’s an effort underway, in the current legislative session in Baton Rouge, to reverse course on the controversial execution method with Senate Bill 430.

Iraq postpones vote on bill including death penalty for same-sex acts

BAGHDAD, April 15 (Reuters) - Iraqi lawmakers postponed voting on Monday on a bill that includes the death penalty or life in prison for same-sex relations - a measure that diplomats from Western countries said could have serious consequences for Iraq's political and economic ties if it goes through. Parliament was in session on Monday, with the bill - an amendment to an anti-prostitution law - second on its agenda.
