Schizophrenic killer is sentenced to death in China for killing 2 pupils

A mentally ill murderer has been sentenced to death in China for killing 2 schoolchildren with a meat cleaver in a revenge attack.

The criminal, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia, slashed 3 pupils and 1 parent near a primary school in Shanghai after choosing the victims randomly, according to the city's high court.

The other child and the parent were injured in the bloody assault in June last year.

The killer, named Huang Yichuan, had plotted the attack to release his anger towards society, according to Shanghai High People's Court which handed out the capital punishment today.

In a statement released through its official social media account, the court said that Huang, who was 29 years old at the time, repeatedly slashed the three children and attacked one parent in their 'critical organs'.

He was caught by police at the scene with the help of passers-by.

The court said in a second trial of the case that although Huang was confirmed to be schizophrenic by authorities and confessed his guilt voluntarily, his motives were 'extremely despicable', his methods were 'particularly cruel' and his case had brought 'exceptionally serious impact' on society.

The court deemed that Huang's illness did not affect his sense of judgement or his abilities to control his behaviour at the time of his crime.

The court ruled in favour of a previous decision by Shanghai Intermediate People's Court and sentenced Huang to death.

Huang was found guilty of intentional homicide and given the capital punishment in his first trial in May by Shanghai Intermediate People's Court.

The intermediate court said Huang had masterminded the attack after believing he had been bullied and hurt by other people, according to a previous report by Shanghai-based Dragon TV.

The report said that he hoped to release his anger through killing innocent children.

Huang was said to have taken photographs of a number of primary schools and kindergartens in Shanghai and Guangzhou between March and October of 2017 before taking aim at the Shanghai World Foreign Language Primary School on June 28 last year for unspecified reasons.

Shanghai High People's Court announced its ruling in front of nearly 60 people in the public trial.

It is not immediately clear if Huang plans to appeal against the sentence to the country's Supreme Court.
