Singapore: Couple charged with murdering 2-year-old daughter after police find remains in pot

A Singaporean couple arrested in June on drug charges were today charged with the murder of their 2-year-old daughter, whose remains police last week found inside a metal pot in their rental flat in Chin Swee Road — five years after her death.

The couple, who have not been named due to a court gag order, allegedly killed the girl in March 2014, according to multiple reports citing the court hearing, adding that they have been charged for other offenses that are mostly drug-related.

Police said in a statement last night that they received a call for assistance at Block 52 Chin Swee Road on Sept. 10 and found the toddler’s remains in the one-room rental flat.

Chinese-language newspaper Lianhe Wanbao had reported that the body was found in a metal pot and that the police were seen leaving the flat carrying the pot and a bag. Meanwhile, The Straits Times said neighbors had smelled “something rotting” in the corridor in the week prior to the body being found.

No explanation has been given as to why the neighbors would have only noticed the smell five years after the fact. Weirder still, the flat has reportedly been occupied — twice — since the couple was arrested. Over the past three to four months, a man in his 20s was said to have been living there. While a couple with children briefly occupied the flat before that.

Only a day before police went to the flat, the woman in question, 31, had been sentenced to five years and two months’ jail over three drug-related charges and one count of theft.

The man, whose cases are still pending, had been charged with two drug-related offenses and one count of rioting, stepping from an April attack in which he and four others allegedly punched and kicked a man and struck him with a helmet, Today reported.

The 31-year-old male, who also allegedly was busted for methamphetamine possession in June 2018, according to the report, was admitted to the Drug Rehabilitation Centre twice — in 2011 and 2016.

Obviously, a lot of questions remain unanswered at this point, and Coconuts Singapore will update the story as new information becomes available.

If found guilty of murder, the couple faces the death penalty.
