Florida: Death sentence upheld for man convicted of killing Santa Rosa Correctional Institution cellmate

Florida's death chamber
The Florida Supreme Court has upheld the conviction and death sentence of a man convicted of brutally killing his cellmate in a reportedly racially motivated attack at the Santa Rosa Correctional Institution in 2012.

In 2017, Shawn Rogers was sentenced to death after he was convicted of first-degree premeditated murder and kidnapping charges in the death of his cellmate, Ricky Dean Martin. He represented himself during the trial.

Following the penalty phase, a jury unanimously recommended the death sentence, and Circuit Court Judge John Simon Rogers handed down the sentence Nov. 3, 2017.

Rogers appealed the sentence Jan. 29, 2018. His appeal was based on multiple claims ranging from the jury not being provided sufficient instructions; to the court wrongly admitting into evidence letters that he wrote on race, politics and his character; to the court taking into account his prior violent felonies.

The court rejected all of those claims and upheld the conviction and sentence on Thursday.

During Rogers' trial, prosecutors presented evidence that Rogers had tied Martin by his hands and feet and tied ripped bed sheets around his neck.

Martin was found bleeding in his cell after suffering from blunt force trauma and cutting wounds. He had boxer shorts and a prayer rug placed over his head.

Prosecutors said Rogers admitted he plotted to kill a white person in retaliation for the 2012 shooting of black teenager Trayvon Martin.
