Tanzanian man smuggling more than a kilogram of meth inside his stomach arrested at Bali airport

A Tanzanian citizen traveling from Doha to Bali was arrested by Ngurah Rai customs officers and Bali Police after an X-ray scan revealed that he was carrying 1.1 kilograms of methamphetamine inside his stomach.

Speaking at a press conference today, Untung Basuki, the head of the Directorate General of Customs and Excise of East and West Nusa Tenggara, confirmed the capture of the alleged drug smuggler, identified as 42-year-old Abdul Rachman Azman.

“The suspect was arrested at the International Arrival Terminal of I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport on January 30, 2019 at 6pm, after officers inspected the suspect’s body via X-ray,” he said, as quoted by Antara Bali.

Azman had reportedly packed 99 capsules of meth inside a condom and swallowed the lot in efforts to avoid detection, according to a report in detiknews.

But despite his extreme method, Azman was found out after X-ray and CT scans carried out at the airport, and then later a local hospital, showed suspicious foreign objects wedged inside his digestive tract.

Once evacuated, the drugs packages were estimated to have a market value of IDR1.7 billion (about US$121,060).

“The total evidence is believed to have an enormous circulation value of around IDR1.7 billion, and could be consumed by 5,655 people assuming one gram is consumed by five people,” commented Basuki, as quoted by Antara Bali.

Meanwhile, the suspect claimed to have been offered a US$2,000 reward should he manage to bring the prohibited goods to Bali. 

Police are still investigating his connections to a larger drug network, according to local reports.

Under Indonesia’s notoriously strict drug laws, Azman faces a maximum sentence of capital punishment and a maximum fine of IDR 10 billion (US$711,938).

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); April 15 2024: Marjan Hajizadeh and Esmail Hassaniani, a couple sentenced to death for drug-related charges in a joint case, were executed in Zanjan Central Prison.  Marjan is reported to have been 16 at the time of arrest, which IHRNGO is working to confirm. The U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments centering on an Arizona death row prisoner that could set new precedent to determining ineffective assistance of counsel.  A Mohave County Superior Court jury convicted Danny Lee Jones for the 1992 murders of Robert Weaver and his daughter Tisha, as well as the attempted murder of Weaver’s grandmother. A judge sentenced Jones to death for the two murders.

There’s an effort underway, in the current legislative session in Baton Rouge, to reverse course on the controversial execution method with Senate Bill 430. When Louisiana legislators approved the use of nitrogen gas asphyxiation as an execution method during a second special legislative session in February, the move attracted national attention; not the least because it has only been used in the U.S. once. That’s when Alabama executed convicted killer Kenneth Eugene Smith on January 25th of this year. Now there’s an effort underway, in the current legislative session in Baton Rouge, to reverse course on the controversial execution method with Senate Bill 430.

Parliament was in session on Monday, with the bill - an amendment to an anti-prostitution law - second on its agenda.

Alabama lawmakers reject bill which would allow some death row inmates to be resentenced

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - An Alabama House committee rejected a bill that would have impacted sentences for dozens of death row inmates. The proposal would have required courts to resentence people sentenced to death by a judge who overrode a jury’s recommendation of life in prison. That practice was outlawed in 2017. Representative Chris England passionately argued it should be retroactively applied for more than 30 death row inmates who were sentenced to death over a jury’s recommendation.
