Jakarta. The Supreme Court has decided to uphold the death sentence for Freddy Budiman, a convicted drug lord who ran an ecstasy ring from behind bars.
The ruling, posted on the court’s website on Tuesday, said judges rejected the appeal of “Freddy Budiman alias Budi bin Nanang Hidayat.”
The verdict was reached on Monday by three judges, including presiding judge Artidjo Alkostar.
A spokesman for the Attorney General’s Office, Tony Spontana, said that Freddy would not be executed just yet, as he might file a request for a case review with the Supreme Court again or ask for clemency from the president.
“There’s a special regulation for convicts on death row,” Tony was quoted as saying by news portal jpnn.com on Tuesday. “If both these legal steps are rejected, then we can carry out the execution.”
However, a spokesman for the Supreme Court disagreed. Quoted by Detik.com, Ridwan Mansyur said that Monday’s ruling was final and binding, and even if Freddy still wanted to ask for a case review or clemency, this should not prevent the AGO from picking a date for Freddy’s execution.
Freddy’s lucrative drug business was revealed by the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) in 2012 when its officers raided a truck containing 1.4 million ecstasy pills in Cengkareng, West Jakarta.
The ecstasy pills were imported from Shenzhen, China, and had successfully passed through security checks at North Jakarta’s Tanjung Priok port.
It was found later that the drugs belonged to Freddy, an inmate who controlled the business from behind bars, using a dozen cellphones at his disposal.
As there we no mitigating factors, Freddy was sentenced to death for importing the ecstasy. He filed an appeal with the Supreme Court and while waiting for the ruling, Freddy, together with two other inmates, continued to sell drugs. He bribed prison officials to turn a blind eye while he managed his ecstasy business.
Freddy also made headlines after his girlfriend, a model named Vonny Rossyane, told media that she was able to often meet Freddy in the room of prison’s chief warden — to consume drugs and engage in sexual intercourse. He has since been transferred to the Nusa Kambangan maximum security prison in Central Java.
