Communist Vietnam's secret death penalty conveyor belt: How country trails only China and Iran for 'astonishing' number of executions

Prisoners are dragged from their cells at 4am without warning to be given a lethal injection Vietnam's use of the death penalty has been thrust into the spotlight after a real estate tycoon was on Thursday sentenced to be executed in one of the biggest corruption cases in the country's history. Truong My Lan, a businesswoman who chaired a sprawling company that developed luxury apartments, hotels, offices and shopping malls, was arrested in 2022.

Iran: 5 hanged, including Afghan national

According to confirmed sources, Iranian authorities have executed at least 5 prisoners in the span of 4 days.

Close sources and the human rights group HRANA report that 3 prisoners were hanged by Iranian authorities on Wednesday November 18 at Zahedan Central Prison (Sistan & Baluchestan) for alleged drug related offenses. 

The names of the prisoners have been reported as Hassan Doroiee Moghaddam, Morteza Lakzaie, and Nazir Ahmad Reigi. 

A confirmed source who asked to be anonymous tells IHR: "Nazir Ahmad Reigi is an Afghan citizen who was held in prison for 6 years prior to his execution."

According to the Kurdistan Human Rights Network, two prisoners were hanged at Miandoab Prison (West Azerbaijan).

One of the prisoners has been identified as Ali Latini, a man who was sentenced to death for an alleged drug related offense. 

No confirmed information is available about the other prisoner.

Official Iranian sources have been silent on these 5 executions.
